About

Across Asia Pacific, countries and cities are competing to become design capitals in their own right, producing and attracting design talent and making an effort to become more creative and bolster their soft power. This has brought a renewed focus on design as a byword for the way we live and as a necessity for the future of our planet.

As an established authority on Asian design, Design Anthology wants to showcase and celebrate regional talent through the Design Anthology Awards. The awards are a way to acknowledge the importance of design in today’s culture and industry, and recognise the talent and vision in the region.

Sponsoring the Design Anthology Awards is a unique opportunity to present your brand as a leader and supporter of design, creativity and culture, and to network with the movers and shakers in the Asia Pacific design community.

Format

The inaugural Design Anthology Awards, held in 2019, was a resounding success. Finalists travelled to Hong Kong from around the world, and the judges and sponsors got to meet and network with the crème de la crème of design talent while entertaining guests at an upscale gala event that provided unquantifiable brand exposure.

In 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Design Anthology Awards pivoted to a hybrid online event. Winners were announced online and trophies were shipped off, while our team in Hong Kong hosted a more social cocktail party and a day of design-related talks with local luminaries at the Hong Kong showroom of our trophy sponsor, Lasvit.

Long, formal awards ceremonies are out of favour with many designers and media. After years of isolation and disconnection, people want togetherness — networking, socialising and sharing stories in a relaxed setting. We also think there is more value for sponsors to be involved in a smaller, more intimate event, and our team can tailor something specific for the right partner.

With this in mind, we held an intimate event at the Tokyo Toranomon EDITION, and this type of togetherness is what we will bring to the 2024 edition, capped off by an event in Singapore.

How Entries Are Assessed

We have selected jury members and designed the judging process to have rigour, transparency and quality.

Jury

We select judges based on not only their merits and achievements as designers, but on their combination of design disciplines, places of origin and their representation of the broader design community. The panel has a high level of female representation. Disciplines span architecture, interiors, product design, design education, curation and communications.

The majority of judges are based in Asia Pacific, while others are based overseas. The standard of work in Asia is equivalent to any around the world, so we believe that having international judges means the Awards are objective and held to world standards, reinforcing their credibility.

Judging process

The process takes place over several stages. First, the Design Anthology team vets all entries for conformance with the submission criteria. We then shortlist entries to a total of maximum 20 per award; these 20 most clearly represent the excellence, innovation and artistic vision needed to be recognised in the Awards. We anonymise the entries and send them to the judges individually with a scorecard.

Each judge then grades all works presented without correspondence with the other judges. The judges return their scorecards, and the scores are tallied and checked, and finalists and winners determined.
